On Dec. 21, 1992, the Louisiana Secretary of State recognized the incorporation of the Louisiana Child Caring Foundation — the entity that eventually became the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation.

In recognition of our 25th anniversary, we’re catching up with grantees, starting with our 23 classes of Angel Award honorees.

Cory Herbert is a veteran of the Lafayette Police Department. As a detective, he assists with many juvenile cases in Lafayette Parish.

While working with children who were victims of sexual abuse, he got to see firsthand how the nonprofit Hearts of Hope, formerly known as Stuller Place, assisted them. The organization provides education, advocacy and empowerment services and programs.

“They were putting children’s lives back together,” Hebert said

Herbert has played a vital role in fundraising efforts for the nonprofit and has helped raise thousands of dollars.

When Herbert was honored with the Angel Award in 2007, Hearts of Hope used the grant to help renovate their building and expand into an adjacent building.
