In 2015, Miguel Alonso moved to the U.S. from Cuba, where he worked as a physician. Unable to practice medicine in the U.S., he took a job as a patient representative for the New Orleans Children’s Health Project (NOCHP). Alonso was tutored by past Angel honoree Carlos Naranjo and, after Carlos’ passing, became the primary case manager for more than 1,000 children each year. His caseload consists primarily of children fleeing horrific violence in Central America. Miguel helps children navigate the barriers to accessing healthcare, including language, transportation and lack of insurance.
