In addition to her work as a senior medical director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Dr. Barfield has volunteered with the Martin Luther King Health Center in Shreveport for eight years. The clinic provides family medicine services for people who cannot afford to pay for healthcare.

Dr. Barfield gives her time as a physician, typically spending at least one day a month doing rounds at the clinic and treating between 5-10 patients each time. Dr. Barfield spends quality time with each patient, longer than the average doctor-patient visit, because she recognizes that they may not get regular medical care. Her patients know and keep up appointments with Dr. Barfield because she takes the time to answer their questions and help them stay on top of any conditions they have.

Dr. Barfield also serves on the clinic’s Board of Trustees and is the adviser to the clinic’s Medical Committee. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Barfield uses her volunteer time at the clinic to mentor students from the area colleges and universities who aspire to healthcare careers. Her volunteerism has directly impacted the lives of hundreds of families by keeping them healthy and happy.
