Following Hurricane Katrina, Sarah became a teacher and learned firsthand about the challenges facing low-income youth in New Orleans. In particular, Sarah witnessed how educational attainment is often disrupted by arrest and detention in the adult or juvenile justice systems.

The Welcoming Project supports young people for five years after being involved with the criminal justice system – filling gaps, providing solutions and teaching skills to get young people back on the path to achievement. As a mentor and advocate, Sarah pitches in wherever she can – mentoring young people, giving them rides to school and work, and being present as an advocate. Most importantly, she helps focus them on goals and lifelong development, and helps them to create pathways for success.

Sarah is recognized as a compassionate and driven advocate. Her vision is to end recidivism for young people through education and support that keeps them away from the criminal justice system, and focused on achievement.
